What Is Your Truth? © Juda Myers 2009
Is it relative to a moment or feeling? Does it depend on your surroundings or the popular beliefs of your peers? How secure can that be? What if you believe one thing now and then you find out it isn't true? What then? What makes something true? Does anyone know?
Well the choice is ours to believe. Truth never changes. We can count on it to be consistent and real. Little known fact that in the early Webster Dictionary, truth was defined by and as Scripture. You won't find that in there today.
I found this interesting as I searched Wikipedia for a definition.
Immanuel Kant discussed the correspondence theory of truth in the following manner, criticizing correspondence theory as circular reasoning.
Truth is said to consist in the agreement of knowledge with the object. According to this mere verbal definition, then, my knowledge, in order to be true, must agree with the object. Now, I can only compare the object with my knowledge by this means, namely, by taking knowledge of it. My knowledge, then, is to be verified by itself, which is far from being sufficient for truth. For as the object is external to me, and the knowledge is in me, I can only judge whether my knowledge of the object agrees with my knowledge of the object.
If that sounds confusing to you, you're not alone. Truth, when we don't trust God to be True makes us unstable in all we do. I see Kant saying that if we are to judge what is true by our own knowledge within, we can't possibly know all truth! So at some point we must trust someone to know the truth. We trust that the manufacturer of a car tells us the truth that the car is drivable. We get in and we move forward on that truth. We trust that the wheel won't fall off and kill us. Why not move forward in God's Truth? Since Adam and Eve (trusting this is a true story) there has been a sense of distrust for God. Is it really true that if you eat from the tree you will die? Eve allowed herself to question Truth and look where it has gotten all of us! God was Truth then and He is now. And like in the days of old, we question Truth today. James 1: 5-8(NIV) If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. It's no wonder people are going in all directions and don't know what to believe. Romans 1:8 talks about suppressing the truth Acts 20:30 talks about distorting the truth Romans 2:8 talks about rejecting truth and following evil Romans 1:25 talks about exchanging the truth of God for a lie 2Thes 2:9-13 says counterfeit signs and wonders deceive those who are perishing
Seems like the only trouble with truth is that we don't want to believe it. Everyone has heard reference to the verse that says “my people perish for lack of knowledge”. Some even stretch it to mean lack of vision or goals. But this is far from the Truth. The actual verse in Hosea 4:6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected (emphasis mine) knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God,
It is such a restful place to believe Truth. Nothing to worry about. We worry when we are trying to make our own truth. God said to cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you? If that is True then we will act like it. We always prove we believe something is True when we act accordingly. The bible is constantly, truly, proving itself to be True. Why not believe God to be the only Truth, everlasting, proven and not from our own knowledge? One example: God knew about cleanliness before people figured it out. Jews were washing and knew not to touch certain things that were unclean because God had instructed them on His truth. So many secular people died at the contaminated hands of doctors who didn't know God's truths. We take it for granted that washing one's hands or wearing gloves in an operating room saves lives. He has shown us what Truth is. Let us not be slow to learn Truth but trust that He is Truth . Now is a most important time to choose to believe His Truth.
