Love + Sacrifice = True Love; True Love Yields Peace and Joy.
Let's look at the term “making love”. Now I dare say, God sending His Son to die for us is not the first thing that comes to mind! Yet we know that God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son. So God is love and He proved it. So is this the example that everyone turns to when we want to know the meaning of love? I don't think so.
No, we fall for the same thinking sometimes, that the world dictates. Universally the world knows what is inferred by the term “making love”. However just making love that way doesn't usually end in a love relationship. Love has to have been proven before this stage to be meaningful and lasting. Commitment and sacrifice will determine how much love is present.
So how is love proven? Flowers, diamonds, candy, sexy clothes is how the world defines love on Valentine's Day? Sure gifts are nice, especially if this is your “love” language. But even someone whose love language is spoken through gifts is usually still not satisfied by gifts alone. We all want to see some kind of sacrifice to prove the love that is spoken. Anyone can say the words, “I love you”. So why don't we believe everyone who says that? Because we have a love filter built into us. Some filters have been left dirty for a long time and thus won't see the purest love. Pure love requires sacrifice. Without sacrifice it is simply selfishness.
Remember we are made in the image of God whether we acknowledge it or not. So if God is sacrificial in showing His love, we will be sacrificial also. True love gives because God is love and He showed us how to love in giving His Son. Jesus showed us how to love in that He gave His life so that we would all have everlasting life if we accepted Him. When people don't accept Him He is deeply hurt. We too will know the pain in having our love rejected but we can also know the joy of heaven when we freely give love and are loved - the ultimate form being His love. His love alone satisfies completely; so many look for love in all the wrong places. True love seen and accepted in Jesus Christ will allow us to see His reflection in other people and ourselves.
John Kocer wrote a book called Victorious Love . This isn't about how the world sees love in a conquering fashion but instead how sacrifice makes us victorious. Jesus loved even in the face of His enemies and overcame evil for all of us! Now the ultimate act of love is forgiveness. “…Father forgive them; for they know not what they do…” Luke 23:34 (KJV)
John says, “Time is crucial for the Body of Christ to come out of the cocoon and be transformed by taking the wings of love and flying to our destinies. This can be done at the speed of light if we will submit and be obedient to His will.” That is where sacrifice to our fleshly desires comes in.
Some people find it hard to love. Hate is strong but love is strongest! Not stronger, but strongest over anything and everything. Love never fails. I used to wonder about that, thinking Jesus couldn't even make everyone love Him but then I realized love never fails the one who gives it! If I give love even in the face of my enemy something miraculous happens; a peace that passes all understanding envelopes us.
Love + Sacrifice = Peace and that equals Joy. Sacrifice is hard or it wouldn't be a sacrifice. But the rewards are beyond comprehension when we love sacrificially like Jesus did.
Love is sacrifice.
