In Dependence Day

How independent are you? What does Independence Day mean to you? Too many times it is simply another excuse for a party. Memories of days past are but faded writings in dusty books. For others it is a moment of pride for all the accomplishments of Americans and the ability to be independent of other nations. So many times people just follow traditions without really knowing what they are doing. Just the title “Independence Day” makes it sound like we are powerful enough to do things on our own. Many people in America feel that there is no need for anyone else. Oh for the power of one!

In what areas are you independent and what does that mean? Does it mean that you need no help from anyone? If we really evaluate our capabilities we are not independent at all. In everything we need the help or inventions of others. Even if you are a genius and can survive on your own in the wilderness, someone showed you how to start that fire. Someone discovered fire before you. Now if we go all the way back to our beginnings we absolutely must admit our dependence on someone for feeding us after birth. Without others we are doomed to death. There is no such thing as true independence. It is just a state of mind. Maybe a nation can celebrate its detachment from another society but to be independent, there has never been such a creature. Because we are all dependent on God regardless of whether we acknowledge that fact or not. Our breath alone is the most important dependent factor. I want to challenge everyone to be dependent this Independence Day. We have the choice to not be independent. This nation wasn't founded on the power of one but instead people were united under one , Almighty God. However, people are people and as scripture says there is nothing new under the sun. A new group of people emerge thinking they are doing it all on their own and owe no one anything. It starts simply as a means of growing up wanting to tie our own shoes but then it turns quickly to selfishness. Humans want the glory for themselves.

Independence Day is one that should have everyone reflecting on the sacrifices that were made so that we could worship freely and independent of force. For that I am most grateful. But like all good things perversion slips in and attempts to destroy the original purpose. Now we must fight the battle once again to worship freely as the very foundation of our society is whittled away. People who want nothing to do with God are now trying desperately to make us dependent on their thoughts. As long as we think of ourselves as an independent people we will stand alone in our trials and will be defeated.

God said for all to come to Him who are heavy laden, who need rest, who need provisions. Who is it that doesn't need health? How dependent we become when our basic functions are gone. All the positive self independent talk will not prevent death!

We are dependent creatures in need of a Savior. The only one who is able to save us is Jesus Christ. Many don't believe that but one day He will prove Himself and all will see their dependence on Him. In that day those who trust in Jesus will know what true independence from evil will feel like. For all eternity we will be dependent on a mighty God. To some that is a horrible thought but to me that is the most wonderful thought. I have peace knowing I am loved by a most capable God. In my dependence I find my independence. I recently got an email with this quote from an unknown author. " Without God, our week is: Mournday, Tearsday, Wasteday, Thirstday, Fightday, Shatterday and Sinday.”

With great passion I ask you to consider your part in keeping our dependence on God free in this country, independent of rule by atheists or secularists or any other group trying to destroy the reason our ancestors died.

Happy In Dependence Day!
