Absolutes

Here's the deal. We live in a relative world. The world tells us that what is true for one person may not be true for another person. This leads us to ask ourselves, are there any absolutes? Is everything always questionable? Is there a right or wrong? Is there a line between lies and truth? Is there a black and white, or is our world a blurry shade of grey?

There are four questionable absolutes that are very popular; innocence, ethics, truth, and good versus evil. So, first is innocence. The world basically tells us that corruption is relative, so everyone is innocent until they become their own definition of corrupt. God doesn't exactly say the same thing. Romans 3:23 says “ ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”(NIV) Point blank. Plain and simple. The bible also gives us Colossians 1:21-22, which explains there is an absolute innocence. “ You used to be far from God. Your thoughts made you his enemies, and you did evil things. But his Son became a human and died. So God made peace with you, and now he lets you stand in his presence as people who are holy and faultless and innocent. ”(CEV) Here's the absolute: we are corrupt, Jesus ' forgiveness makes us innocent. Period.

So, what about ethics ? Is there a true difference between right and wrong? Or is what's right for me not right for someone else? The world says there is no line to draw. And the sad fact is many Christians have fallen into the same lie and believe that it's okay for nonbelievers to act against God's Word because they are not believers and do not know God. In Romans 1, Paul is talking about how God has revealed himself to both the Jews and Gentiles. Even though the Gentiles didn't necessarily have instructions on God, they still had no excuse because God has revealed himself to them through creation and miracles. Look it up, Romans 1:14-20. Here's the absolute: God's do's and do not's are true for everyone. Period.

Truth is one of the hardest things to understand. The definition of an absolute truth is something true for all people, in all places, in all times. Looking at this definition, the world says there are no absolutes. But God makes it pretty simple in John 14:6, when Jesus says "I am the way, the truth , and the life!"(CEV) Here's the absolute: God/Jesus is the truth. Period.

Good and evil are the basis of everything, but the question is where the line between the two is. What is evil? What is good? Is the difference between the two the same for everyone? Or is it just other people's perception that makes the difference? There is so much detail that could be gone into, but really it's simple. Here's the absolute: what God's Word says is evil is evil, what God's Word says is good is good. Period.

Basically, here's the absolute: God. Period.
