Princess 2 Princess

With Michele Murry

Over the past several years I've tried to think more about my presents and put more time and effort into my giving.  I love to spoil people with gifts, but I had to come to the realization that spending money, especially money I really didn't have to spend, was not what people really want.  They want to know they are special, that they are loved.  So, for the past few years I have made most of my gifts.  To be honest, by the time I've bought all the materials and such, my presents haven't been all that much less expensive, but I put a lot of love and effort and thought into each present that I made.  I wanted just the right color for each person, just the right thing that would make them smile, something that would make them smile every time they used it.  Perhaps they would've preferred that I just go out and spend the money on something else, but I preferred something that was given from my heart.  That's not to say that a bought present isn't as special as a homemade present.  What matters is where our heart is when we choose a present for our loved ones.

I'm so thankful for the thought that was put into the gift that God gave us on that blessed Christmas morning.  He didn't just rush out and buy something at the last minute.  He saw from the beginning of time what we would need, what would enhance our life more than anything else; a Savior.  He planned out every detail of that perfect gift right down to the packaging, the timing, the meaning, and the price it would cost.  It would mean a time of pain for Him as He would have to watch His only Son go through rejection and pain and an unbearable death.  It would mean He would have to be separated from His Son for a time while Jesus descended down into the very depths of hell in order to conquer death once and for all for our sins.  He had to acknowledge that all of the effort of His gift would be rejected by many.  He knew His gift would be spit upon by some, embraced by others.  But when He chose His gift for us, His main driving purpose was to give us the perfect gift from His heart; salvation.

Not only do we need to work hard to give gifts from our heart that show our love for those we are giving to, but we also need to receive gifts with an attitude of gratefulness and thankfulness from our heart.  This is not just a time of year to get all the things we want, but is an expression of love and remembrance of the ultimate and perfect gift of all time; the Christ child.  May our hearts be so full of the love of Christ this year that it overflows in our giving and receiving.
